You likely also spent a bunch of time planning your life — what your wedding would be like, what kind of dress you would wear, what kind of house you wanted, how many kids you were going to have two boys and two girls and what their names would be. Your future life as a mother and a wife was the stuff of dreams. But how about if you were a boy? At 12, were you spending your evenings with your ear glued to the phone chatting with your friend about the goings on of everyone in class? Were you profoundly interested in what Matt wore to school that day? Did you really care? And were you dreaming about your future life as a husband and father, exploring ad nauseum with your buddy whether Charlotte is a nicer name for your future daughter than Emma? The focus was on the game, not on what your friend felt about the game. Maybe got some schooling, a job and eventually coupled up with someone and got married. And although the boys have been on a different path than the girls all along, we somehow expect those paths to converge at the altar.

In an effort to not become a part of that statistic, I started doing a little research on what makes for a stable marriage in America. The authors of this study polled thousands of recently married and divorced Americans married or later and asked them dozens of questions about their marriage: How long they were dating, how long they were engaged, etc.
After running this data through a multivariate model, the authors were able to calculate the factors that best predicted whether a marriage would end in divorce. What struck me about this study is that it highlighted about a dozen predictors that correlate with stable or unstable marriages in the U. I highly recommend checking the study out yourself linked above to look at all of them. Having children with your spouse We all know someone who was on the verge of a breakup or divorce until they announced that they were having a baby with their spouse.
Of course, having children within wedlock — another telltale sign of a well-planned marriage — reduces your chances of divorce moreso than having children before you tie the knot. It seems that shotgun weddings are more stable than we would expect them to be! Being the same age as your spouse Perhaps unsurprisingly, the larger the age gap between you and your partner, the more likely your marriage will end in divorce.
A previous version of this article showed a chart giving specific relative percent likelihoods of divorce occurring based on number of years married. The original authors of the study have pointed out that although there is a significant correlation between wider age gaps and increased divorce, it is not possible to determine the relative percent likelihood from their study. That is left to future research.
Either people in stabler marriages are more likely to have kids in wedlock, or people in less stable unhappy marriages tend not to have kids.

Nov 07, · Before finally deciding to marry my husband, I took the time to research about what life would be for me in his country. I didn’t really have a concrete idea on what life as a “foreign” married woman in Korea would be like since information on the net was rather scarce during that time.
Young Adult Questions about dating have been included in all Young Adult survey rounds, although the structure and amount of information collected has varied. All Young Adult surveys have included questions about whether the respondent has ever dated and, if so, at what age they first began dating. From through , Young Adults were also asked for the month and year they first dated.
If they did, they were asked follow-up questions about plans to get married to that person and the likelihood of cohabitation with that person. Any respondent who indicated either specific or general marriage plans was also asked the age at which that might occur. Everyone who was neither married nor cohabiting was also asked two additional questions about the number and frequency of dates in the previous 12 months. Beginning in , the dating questions were changed significantly.
For example, questions to ascertain the month and year of the first date were dropped. Since , new Young Adults under age 21 have been asked how many close friends they have who are girls and who are boys. These two questions had also been asked of these respondents as children in the Child Self-Administered Supplement.
Initially they are asked the number of people they have dated in the last 12 months and, if the number is one or more, how often they go out on dates. They are then asked whether they are currently dating only one person, more than one person, or no one.
