The deed of foundation given in the form of a Papal bull by Pope Pius II on November 12, , and the official opening ceremony was held on April 4, The faculty of arts served until as the foundation for the other three academic subjects. In the eighteenth century as Basel became more commercial, the university, one of the centers of learning in the Renaissance, slipped into insignificance. Enrollment which had been over a thousand around , dropped to sixty in with eighteen professors. The professors themselves were mostly sons of the elite. Around the same time as the university itself, the Basel University Library was founded. Today it has over three million books and writings and is the largest library in Switzerland. These factors affected student attendance, funding, university-government relations. In the Canton of Basel split in two with the Federal Diet requiring that the canton’s assets, including the books at the University library, be divided—two-thirds going to the new half canton of Basel-Landschaft.

In an interview with Daily Monitor on Monday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, said the university comprises mature people who may develop mutual passionate feelings towards each other, but when this happens, the supervisor must declare conflict of interest and hand over that student to another colleague. Where mutual feelings develop, the supervisor should excuse himself and hand over the student and this is only for mutually agreed relationships,” Prof Nawangwe said.

During a graduate students supervisors seminar for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in Kampala, the university’s Deputy Director of Research and Graduate Studies, Prof David Owiny, told lecturers it is normal for them to develop love relationships with students under their supervision. However, in such circumstances, they should declare their romantic affairs to the university administration.

Prof Owiny said even within the university, there are staff members who have raised strong families through such relationships. When asked yesterday whether this will not lead to staff indulging in sexual affairs with students and later victimise them, Prof Buyinza Mukadasi, the head of Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies, said they have no powers to stop such romantic relationships.

In a university situation, it is not unknown for a fling between student and lecturer to happen. Infact, when I was at college a guy I knew had a brief affair with an older female lecturer. It ended quickly and then was of embarrassment for both of them – but that was their problem.

Green and Hossein Nasr have argued that starting in the 10th century, some medieval Islamic madrasas became universities. Medieval university and List of medieval universities The university is generally regarded as a formal institution that has its origin in the Medieval Catholic tradition. It is possible, however, that the development of cathedral schools into universities was quite rare, with the University of Paris being an exception. In the early medieval period , most new universities were founded from pre-existing schools, usually when these schools were deemed to have become primarily sites of higher education.

Many historians state that universities and cathedral schools were a continuation of the interest in learning promoted by monasteries. The University of Bologna began as a law school teaching the ius gentium or Roman law of peoples which was in demand across Europe for those defending the right of incipient nations against empire and church.

Bologna’s special claim to Alma Mater Studiorum [ clarification needed ] is based on its autonomy, its awarding of degrees, and other structural arrangements, making it the oldest continuously operating institution [9] independent of kings, emperors or any kind of direct religious authority. Are college professors/lecturer’s allowed to date their students?

To the OP, what things are you worried he will let slip about other pupils? As a lecturur there are rules of confidentiality that must be followed so he would not be allowed to give such information to anyone, not even a girlfriend. I feel your worries are misplaced there.

Hopefully university students should be able to make up their own minds about who they see, and there are a lot worse people than lecturers out there. The problem is that the lecturer can make the student’s life absolutely miserable if they so choose.

Such is the case here, and thus I somewhat question the motives of the author of the post, Kelly Anders. Asking the question creates the illusion that there is a real controversy. I addressed this question a long time ago, in an early post here barely seen at the time but among the most frequently visited since. Dating a student is a professional breach of trust, and one that adversely effects the integrity of the entire educational institution….

A teacher always has superior power over any student by virtue of his or her position of authority, and it is an abuse of that power to use it to entice students into dates or bed… [It] is naive to ignore the extended conflicts such relationships create. Will the professor consciously or subconsciously be easier on the friends of his student lover if they are in his class? The fact that the question can be asked shows that the situation should not occur where it can be asked.

Students, all students, must be off-limits as romantic partners for professors and administrators in universities, regardless of what rules are in place. Professors who date students risk their jobs because a student body is not their sexual smorgasbord, and it is a breach of trust and duty to treat it like one.

First things first.

Major concerns around lack of teaching support and transparency have been raised by students following months of unrest at the University of Tasmania’s School of Creative Arts SOCA campus in Hobart. For an entire week semester, two arts teachers were absent from class without explanation. The pair were under investigation but were not replaced during the course of the semester.

Adding to the problems, the conditions under which the technical staff are employed in the arts department has been placed in doubt.

Share this article Share His thesis – which contained an example of male female matchmaking similar to Hall’s – was returned and marked as ‘offensive’, The Daily Telegraph reported. Mr Lynch, who founded UNSW student group Free Thinkers, said he was shocked when students were told the word marriage was offensive in a lecture. English mathematician Philip Hall proved the theory in , and it uses the example of monogamous heterosexual couples in matchmaking with variable sets.

Senior lecturer and UNSW academic advisor Dr Thomas Britz called the actions of the staff members involved ‘too forceful and inappropriate’. Dr Britz said he would speak to the staff involved, but called on students to be respectful of their peers. English mathematician Philip Hall pictured proved the theory in , and it uses the example of monogamous heterosexual couples in matchmaking with variable sets Mr Lynch claims gay marriage was not mentioned during the lectures in question, but believes the divisive issue is behind the lecturers’ actions.

Students at the University of Sydney clashed last week when a ‘no’ campaign rally turned violent after ‘yes’ campaign counter-protesters turned up. Just days later a gay man was viciously heckled at a similar rally and accused of ‘internalised homophobia’.

Rather than just making minor changes to existing production systems, these students are out to rethink the entire production cycle by optimising production goals as well as environmental targets. They seek to develop sustainable pathways for every level of food production, to use new technologies to comply with increased regulation, and to eliminate waste from the entire production cycle.

However, the University has a duty of care to its students. This duty of care is owed to students by all University staff but owed in especially important ways by Tutors. The Head of Department, or the appropriate Dean, must therefore be informed so that the necessary arrangements can be made; these will of course seek to ensure that the student is neither advantaged nor disadvantaged.

Manchester University Place building Image: More than 25 academics and staff have put their names to a letter outlining their concerns on the Student Union website. They say university staff are being expected to identify students who may have been radicalised and flag up potential terrorist activity. They fear it could set a precedent for the racial and religious profiling of Muslim students.

The Prevent strategy was met with caution when first introduced at the university in Download our app for Apple and Android devices The letter in full “This statement outlines a number of reservations regarding the Prevent agenda that Higher Education providers, including the University of Manchester, now have a statutory duty to observe. Prevent asks us, as University Staff, to identify potential radicalisation amongst students at the University see Paragraph 15 of the Prevent Duty Guidance.

First, as lecturers, we are deeply concerned that our role as teachers is fundamentally compromised by the expectation that we also assume the role of the security authorities i. This extended remit sets a dangerous precedent in terms of what roles University lecturers, on the basis of their own private judgements, are expected to assume. Second, it is impractical for University lecturers to assume the role of surveillance. The Prevent guidance regarding potential student radicalisation is dangerously vague, leading to a considerable uncertainty regarding the risk factors that lecturers are expected to monitor.

This uncertainty will ensure that the role expected of lecturers is simply impracticable. Third, there is a risk that a variety of ordinary academic activities will become the object of unwarranted scrutiny as a result of the Prevent guidance.

University chiefs are calling for so-called “essay mills” to be made illegal, amid fears they are undermining the integrity of degree courses. The services, which are illegal in some countries, provide custom essays for students to cheat with. If university administrators and trustees hope to demonstrate that they take their fiduciary responsibilities toward students – and yes, faculty – seriously, they need to develop educational programs that inform both parties of the dangers of entering into intimate relationships with one another.

Every material on this site is authentic and was extracted from the complete available project. The survey research was used in this study to sample the opinion of respondents. This method involved random selection of respondent who were administered with questionnaires. The descriptive and analytical approach was adopted using Chi-square to test and analyze the hypotheses earlier stated. It was recommended that policy makers in education and lecturers should strive more to devise ways in school system patterns and internal school arrangements for instructors to offer other useful interactions and mentoring students besides just giving academic instructions.

There was a commitment on the part of teachers, respect and other cultural values were upheld by both parents and students. Teachers are role models to students and an instrument through which students could clamp the ladder of greatness in the society. Teachers and students convey a range of goals, needs, feelings and behavioral scheme that affect the quality of the relationship they form and influence values of their experiences with one another in the classroom.

My American hosts say that the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. That is what ASUU has been doing in the last 15 years or thereabouts. The golden age of the ASUU struggle ended about 20 years ago. The current strike is not about a plan by the federal government to introduce fees and student loans. That is just ASUU propaganda, designed to curry sympathy with parents, students, and the general public.

For additional emotional appeal, they decided to highlight an old, largely discredited federal government proposal — a mere proposal — about the introduction of tuition fees and the establishment of education banks. ASUU Strikes have become counterproductive in several ways. The government usually waits it out until ASUU is desperate for a deal — any deal — because of financial hardship occasioned by several months of its members going unpaid, and because of pressure from parents and students, who, in recent years, have turned decisively against ASUU, influencing public opinion that now sees ASUU honchos as selfish, money-grabbing activists who do not have the interest of students at heart.

Whether this is fair to ASUU or not is not the point. The point, rather, is that a wise, self-reflective, and self-critical body of activists tries not to overplay its hand or lose the support of its constituency or the public. A wise trade or professional union knows when to fight and when not to, and knows when a particular method of struggle has exhausted its effectiveness, its lifespan, and has begun to yield diminishing returns. As things stand, the government has mastered the game, playing ASUU leaders like a set of drums.

But ASUU leaders are willing participants in the theatre.
